Lydia's Story
I became a befriender to help someone in the community who may be less active and would like some company. I was quite new to the area and looking to volunteer locally so befriending looked ideal to fit in with my week.
I was so happy to be matched with Molly. She has had such an interesting life and has a wealth of stories. We have both lived overseas and can share our experiences. I have learnt so much about the history of our community.
Molly no longer drives yet has maintained her independence in her elegant home and beloved gardens. She is the perfect host and we often stay home for tea and cakes with her little dog. We also take trips out in my car for lunch, garden centres, shopping, dog walks and even theatre, cinema and family occasions.
I have taken Molly to appointments and I have found information to make life a little easier and just been an extra pair of ears.
We both really enjoy meeting more friends at the Visiting Friends coffee mornings and particularly appreciate the beautiful themed tables.
I really enjoy that our friendship is across generations. It is a reminder of the rich and varied lives we all have and a deeper respect for the footsteps we walk in. It is important to reflect on memories and to keep creating new ones. It can take just a couple of hours of company to lift someone’s spirits and make a difference to their week.
Jayne and Debbie have grown a much needed organisation to combat loneliness. The training and support is excellent and meetings are fun and informative keeping us all connected. They make everyone feel valued and worthwhile.
I hope when I am in my 80s I can still make new friends and find support. Friendship really does matter
